Unix time

A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix epoch), ignoring leap seconds. It is time-zone independent, which makes it ideal for storing and comparing instants.

Different systems use different precisions:

Unit Digits (today) Typical source
Seconds 10 Unix date +%s, most APIs
Milliseconds 13 JavaScript Date.now(), Java
Microseconds 16 PostgreSQL, Python time.time_ns() // 1000
Nanoseconds 19 Go time.UnixNano()

The converter detects the unit automatically from the number’s size, and you can override it.

Converting a date to a timestamp

Enter an ISO 8601 date like 2024-05-01T12:00:00Z. If you leave out the offset, the date is read in the time zone you selected.
